Senior Unix Systems Administrator (Chicago)
Position requires Solid understanding of a UNIX-based operating system; Understanding of paging and swapping, inter-process communication, devices and what device drivers do, and file system concepts; Ability to use performance analysis to tune systems; Solid understanding of networking/distributed computing environment concepts; Understanding principles of routing, client/server programming, and design of consistent network-wide file system layouts; Strong understanding of clustered UNIX environments for mission-critical production work; Strong interpersonal and communication skills; capable of writing proposals or papers, project plans, acting as a vendor liaison, making presentations to customer or client audiences or professional peers, and working closely with upper management; Ability to solve problems quickly and completely; Ability to identify tasks which require automation and automate them; Knowledge of Trading Systems, Market Data Services, or finance background; Experience with EMC Symmetrix storage systems; Experience with Veritas Foundation Suite of products; Ability to program in an administrative language (Tk, Perl, a shell). Pluses: Experience with Legato Networker, Tibco Rendezvous, Solaris Jumpstart, cfengine, DNS, DHCP, NFS, NIS; Design and implementation of a disaster recovery facility for Unix systems. Bachelors Degree or equivalent required. Responsibilities include Designing/implementing complex local and wide-area networks of machines (This includes the mission-critical clustered Unix environment.); Managing a large site of development, quality assurance (QA), and production machines; Working under general direction from senior management; Establishing/recommending policies on system use and services; Some responsibility for purchase justification.
Unix staff is on-call for 3rd level support to repair production problems 7 x 24 on a rotating basis. A pager and cell phone will be provided by the company. PC can be provided for off hour VPN support.
